Today I am putting Sultan Deluxe under the microscope and looking at the good and bad. This is of course just my personal opinion! *This page may contains affiliate links

The hard facts:

Size: 5ply Sport Weight

Range: At the time of writing this 31 colours available

Colour transition: Slow gradient

My Opinion

For:

I have to say I am loving the Hobbii Sultan Deluxe!

It is super soft and a joy to work with. This yarn has a lovely sheen to it to!

Colour of course is an objective thing and this yarn does come in a pretty decent colour range. You will seldom (unless I am forced) see me working in the greens on offer as I find working with green to be just plain, well, YUCK! But with 31 colours in the range I can most certainly dodge the offensive greens and find something that just begs me to work with it.

The cakes come with a soft pull tab to make that centre pull nice and easy. This is a bonus and makes the decision to work from the centre of the cake a lot easier.

The biggest thing that I love about this yarn is that you will not be finding any defiant loops poking out, one full round later on your project. It is not made from individual strands of cotton that typically create this issue and I have decided I really do dislike working with slow gradient yarns made up that way. With this yarn you won’t find yourself having to redo a stitch as your lazy hook missed a strand and the nasty little thing is poking out in a very mocking manner, creating a feature that was never intended.

While this is classified as a sport weight or 5ply yarn, I don’t find it a lot different to working in yarns such as Scheepjes Whirl for example.

With this weight in mind, think of using it for shawls, summer skirts or lighter-weight blankets.

I work in cotton rather a lot. This could be related to where I live which is sub-tropical and so the lighter weight yarns seem more attractive due to this. I also like working in cotton and so I am naturally drawn to yarns such as these.

I typically head for my trusty 3.5mm hook when working in yarns of this type and the poor thing is starting to get a little stooped over (bent in the middle). I do tend to have a very firm tension, so my hook probably does have the right to complain a little about the poor treatment.

Cover Me In Dragonflies and Flowers Shawl (click here to be taken to the pattern) is my most recent design and made with Hobbii Sultan Deluxe in the colourway Edcora Red. I chose a colour I may not have normally worked in and I do love it. Edcora Red is simply striking.

I have a number of these cakes lurking in my yarn stash and will be looking forward to using them very soon!

.Against:

Now please remember these are my own personal gripes and what bugs me may not bother anyone else!

I would think that anyone on a budget may need, or want to steer clear of Hobbii Sultan Deluxe. There are cheaper yarns in the range for sure and if you don’t have a thing about working in yarn of individual strands then there is certainly a lot more of an affordable option.

I don’t really have any other negative things to say about this yarn.

Overall:

Love it! Happy to use it again.
